For its extent and flowrate, the Acquedotto Pugliese is one of the most impressive and exemplary works of hydraulic engineering in the world, with its far-ranging system of water intake works, pipelines and interconnections over a vast geographical area with a high population density. Acquedotto Pugliese has undertaken a complex series of initiatives aimed at restoring the efficiency and reliability of the integrated water utility, initiatives concerning both infrastructures and their management.
THE PROJECT: CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
The primary aim is to improve water supply efficiency by reducing administrative and physical losses and by designing the restoration and renovation works for the entire network. To this end, the Company has carried out, for a total of almost 4000km of network serving over 2.5 million inhabitant, a vast series of largely integrated services including the creation of the necessary basic cartography, surveys of water supply networks, monitoring and detection of losses, the implementation of a geographical information system (GIS), user analysis, mathematical models for each supply network, assessment of water recovery, network structural or optimization works. We cannot fail to mention the essential figure for the goals achieved: the repair of leaks for about 1300 l/s with an overall recovery of 14,100,000 m3/year. Such savings mean fewer pressure limitations and provide an environmental benefit for the water cycle. The amount of data collected makes it an avant-garde reality from the point of view of extent and detail. By way of example, the database includes over 70,000 valves, 250,000 diversions and 170,000 meters, all located and full described. Every infrastructural information is contained in the geo-database of the AQP geographical information system (GIS). Research in the field and engineering services have resulted in: the rationalization and optimization of pressure fields; restored efficiency by replacing and renewing the network; immediate repair and/or restructuring works through detailed engireering documents.
